I must have been otherwise engaged when they were handing out slender ankles, so imagine my delight upon discovering that this autumn is going to be – fanfare please – the season of the trouser! In reality, every season is the season of the trouser for me, but it’s always a bonus when the fashion gods smile on you and make you relevant again without even having to try.

New York had reigned as top fashion city for five years until Milan took the lead last year in the list compiled by the Global Language Monitor, a US based non-profit group that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in the media, on the internet and throughout the blogosphere.

So many of us complain that British retailers haven’t a clue about dressing middle-aged women – it’s so bad in this country that Mary Portas is on the point of launching a crusade. So inured am I to the impossibility of finding a shop I could honestly recommend to friends as worth a trip to London that, this week, when I cut through Fenwick of Bond Street, I was stunned. There’s been a revamp, and it’s excellent – so good that, a few paces into the handbag department (an area that repulses me in other London department stores), I stopped in my tracks.

Sienna Miller’s sister: I won’t make dress for her wedding to Jude Law

Sienna Miller is rumoured to be marrying Jude Law this summer, but her sister, Savannah, a fashion designer, does not expect to be asked to create the bridal gown.
“There will be a lot of competition from the likes of Galliano and other designers, so I doubt I’ll be making her dress,” says Savannah, 31.
